PGW OFFERS ENERGY AND MONEY-SAVING TIPS AS WARMER TEMPERATURES ARRIVE

cool and save money on energy bills
PHILADELPHIA (May 9, 2023) –As Philadelphia transitions seasons, Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) offers customers helpful tips on how to stay cool and comfortable in their homes, conserve energy, and manage their natural gas bills after the winter heating season.
The most effective way to conserve energy and reduce household energy costs is with a smart thermostat. These devices can be controlled by a cell phone and include conservation features such as motion sensors, alerts, and integration with other smart devices. PGW customers can receive a $70 instant rebate toward the purchase of a smart thermostat through the PGW Marketplace.
More home energy-efficient tips include:
- Using appliances such as dishwashers, laundry machines, and clothes dryers in the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower.
- Turning off fans when leaving a room. Fans help keep you cool, but most do not lower home temperatures.
- Checking to make sure the air conditioning unit is in good condition and will work properly.
- Cleaning or replacing HVAC air filters can lower your system's energy consumption by up to 15%.
- Using natural ventilation. If you can do so safely, open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to contain the cool air.
- Lowering your water heater’s thermostat. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lowering the water heater by 10 degrees can save up to 5 percent in energy costs.
In addition to these tips, PGW reminds income-eligible customers that financial assistance is available for their natural gas bills through PGW’s Customer Responsibility Program (CRP), as well as other PGW payment assistance programs that best fit customers’ needs.
For Appliances: PGW’s Parts & Labor Plan protects customers from parts and labor costs associated with repair or replacement of defective or worn parts as a result of normal usage of covered equipment, including electric central air. Visit pgwplp.com.
