Philadelphia Gas Works Celebrates Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day

PGW employees work across the city and around the clock to provide safe, reliable natural gas service

PHILADELPHIA (March 18, 2021) – Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) will observe national Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day on Thursday, March 18, 2021. This day of recognition was established by the American Public Gas Association to honor utility employees for their hard work and accomplishments in safely delivering natural gas to communities across the nation in an environmentally responsible way.

Safety has long been a core value for the natural gas industry and during the COVID-19 pandemic, safety precautions became even more important to both PGW and its customers. Throughout the health crisis, PGW employees determinedly performed their duties, responded to emergencies, and strictly followed local, state and federal health guidelines while making every effort to protect customers and mitigate the spread of the virus.

PGW utility workers wore extra protective gear and face coverings, observed social distancing guidelines, and took all precautions upon entering – when necessary – customers’ homes or businesses.

While working under the uncertainty of a pandemic over the last year, PGW employees have taken great pride in serving more than 1.2 million Philadelphia residents. In addition to supplying the natural gas that heats homes and powers businesses, PGW’s 1,600 utility workers’ responsibilities include:

  • Managing 6,000 miles of underground pipeline and replacing miles of vintage natural gas mains with new, modern pipes to enhance service safety and reliability in addition to reducing emissions.
  • Providing emergency financial assistance to those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Delivering reliable energy to meet the diverse needs of the City’s local and small businesses.
  • Contributing to the local economy as PGW employees not only work in Philadelphia, but also live in the city.
  • Employees raising tens of thousands of dollars in donations to support The United Way of Greater Philadelphia and South Jersey and other local charities.
  • Launching PGW’s Marketplace where customers can receive instant rebates on smart thermostats that can help them conserve energy, improve home comfort, and control energy costs in time for winter bills.

“Our dedicated PGW employees are committed to providing outstanding service to our more than 500,000 customers and safely operating the city’s natural gas system year-round,” said Seth Shapiro, Chief Operating Officer at PGW. “Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day is an opportunity to recognize the passion our workforce brings to the job each day and to appreciate their contributions to the growth and success of Philadelphia.”
