PGW Teams Up With NextDoor
Posted on: May 12, 2015We are extremely excited to officially join Nextdoor, a private social network for you, your neighbors and your community. And it's free. The quickly growing social media platform allows us to actively communicate with communities, promote infrastructure improvement, offer safety advice and tips and participate in the public conversation.
Melanie McCottry, Director of Public Affairs for Philadelphia Gas Works, noted the importance of being able to share information so people can utilize it: “PGW works for Philadelphia and using Nextdoor helps us to be better corporate citizens and better communicators with residents and businesses in the city; while we continue to provide safe, reliable service to the city and our customers.”
So how does Nextdoor work and why should you (and we) use it?

This interactive platform is attractive because it allows us to communicate directly to residents about happenings in their neighborhood. Ever wonder what the construction on your block is all about? With Nextdoor, you can easily find out.
In this free, private neighborhood network, you can post alerts, polls, recommendations or whatever else you or your neighbors need to know. Tim Hitchens, of the Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition, who also spoke briefly at the event, said that, “Nextdoor is really helpful for finding out about what’s going on in your neighborhood.”
Nextdoor is different from the other platforms (such as Facebook or Twitter) because we can hyper-localize our content so it is more specific to you and your neighbors. So while on Twitter you can follow us at @MyPGW for a wider array of information, on Nextdoor we’ll be delivering you only the news that is geographically relevant to where you are.
According to Joseph Porcelli, the Senior City Strategist for Nextdoor, the platform boasts a presence in 270 Philadelphia neighborhoods and growing which equals about 83% coverage; “building safer and happier neighborhoods.”
The “About” section also shares great ways to use Nextdoor:
• Receive construction notices and updates for your neighborhood
• Quickly get the word out about a break-in
• Organize a Neighborhood Watch Group
• Find a new home for an outgrown bike
• Ask for help keeping an eye out for a lost dog
• Finally call that nice man down the street by his first name
For us, Nextdoor is another way to strengthen our connection to Philadelphia residents and neighborhoods and improve overall customer satisfaction.
