PGW Receives Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to Launch a “Green Fleet”

April 19, 2023 - Five new electric vehicles (EVs) will be added to Philadelphia Gas Works’ fleet this year thanks to a $28,125 Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). Two of the vehicles will arrive next month; the other three later this year. Additionally, PGW will install electric vehicle charging stations at its Montgomery Avenue headquarters in the near future.

The Chevy Bolt Electric Utility Vehicles  – which can be fully charged in less than eight hours and have a travel range of nearly 250 miles – are part of PGW’s new “Green Fleet” pilot program that will be utilized every day by PGW customer service and field operations personnel. Adding the EVs to PGW’s fleet operations is estimated to reduce PGW’s gasoline usage by over 3,400 gallons per year and reduce its carbon footprint by over 24 tons a year.

The funding and acquisition of the vehicles reaffirm PGW’s ongoing leadership in Philadelphia’s clean energy future and can help PGW reach its 2050 goal of reducing methane emissions by 80 percent.

The goals of the grant, according to the PA DEP, “are to improve Pennsylvania’s air quality and protect Pennsylvania’s environment through the use of alternative fuels that will advance economic development in the Commonwealth and reduce dependence on petroleum products.”

“PGW thanks the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for their commitment to clean transportation and for awarding us this generous grant that will enable PGW to safely serve our customers while contributing to the Commonwealth’s efforts to combat climate change,” said Janelle Johnson-Grummert, Director of Sustainability at PGW.
