PGW Embarks on Comprehensive Emissions Reduction Planning
Posted on: Sep 14, 2022PGW is embarking on an ambitious new effort which will, for the first time, identify, quantify, and reduce its direct and indirect Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) across PGW’s footprint, which include a broad range of criteria such as emissions from contractors, transportation, and customers’ end use of natural gas.
PGW recently issued a request for proposals, seeking expert partners to conduct a set of services targeting comprehensive emissions reduction planning, which includes:
- Defining categories of the types of emissions in PGW’s Scope 3 inventory.
- Developing a data-model that captures and calculates the Scope 3 GHG inventory.
- Identifying, evaluating, and selecting new or enhanced PGW emission reduction programming opportunities.
- Identifying requirements for creating and selling carbon offsets and/or renewable natural gas credits.
- Providing PGW annual support to refine its data-model and consulting PGW on emerging sustainability topics and initiatives.
PGW will also examine and set emissions targets for its proactive energy efficiency programs including EnergySense and Home Comfort.
PGW will further canvas its Scope 1 emissions (those directly from PGW operations) and Scope 2 emissions (from electricity use) to seek opportunities for greater efficiencies, including enhancing PGW’s Methane Reduction Program.
As a leader in Philadelphia’s clean energy future, PGW’s examination of its greenhouse gas emissions not only empowers the utility to target emissions reductions, but it also allows PGW to engage with contractors and partners to set the stage for a more transparent and viable emissions reduction pathway.
